Ukraine: Bomb Kills 1

KIEV () -- A bomb exploded outside the apartment of the Crimean first deputy prime minister, killing the man carrying the device.

No one else was hurt by Sunday's 1 a.m. blast in the corridor outside the Simferopol apartment of Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Demidenko, police said.

According to Interfax, Demidenko blamed the bombing on "forces" trying to destabilize the restive Black Sea peninsula.

Demidenko also said the bombing might be connected to a series of telephone death threats received by Prime Minister Anatoly Franchuk.

Both men are in the forefront of the government's attempt to curb a rising crime wave that has made their region a haven for mobsters.
