Salinas Withdraws Bid

MEXICO CITY () -- Former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari withdrew his candidacy to lead the World Trade Organization, a day after his brother was arrested and charged in a political killing.

Salinas' bid to lead the new and potentially powerful organization was backed by the United States, but he was opposed by candidates from Europe and Asia. Even before the latest incident, his chances were badly damaged by a sudden crisis in the Mexican economy that started Dec. 20, three weeks after he left office. Many analysts blamed him, at least in part, for the problem
