Pope to Visit U.S.

VATICAN CITY () -- Pope John Paul, dogged by health problems over the past two years, will visit the United States in October, the Vatican said Thursday.

The Pontiff was forced to postpone the trip last year after he slipped in his bathroom in the Vatican last April and broke his leg.

"The Holy Father will visit the United Nations on Oct. 5 as the UN celebrates its 50th anniversary," chief Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said in a statement. The pope is due to make a major address to the UN General Assembly.

"He will also make pastoral visits to the dioceses of New York, Newark, Brooklyn and Baltimore, returning to Rome on Oct. 8," he added.
