Mormon Leader Dies

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah () -- Howard Hunter, the second-oldest man ever to become president of the Mormon Church, died Friday, nine months after taking office. He was 87.

He served less time in office than any of his 13 predecessors.

Hunter, a former corporate lawyer, became the 14th "prophet, seer and revelator" of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 5 following the death of Ezra Taft Benson.

The church said Jan. 18 that Hunter had prostate cancer which had spread to his bones. Hunter's doctor described his condition then as serious.
