Group Denies Vedenkin Has Membership

Leaders of the extreme nationalist group Russian Unity denied Friday that Alexei Vedenkin, the hardliner detained earlier last week after making extremist statements on television, was a member of their organization.

Alexander Rashitsky, chief spokesman for Russian Unity, rejected Vedenkin's description of himself as deputy head of the group and said he was not even a member.

Rashitsky told a press conference that the group would take legal action against Russian Television, whose correspondent had described Unity as a fascist organization during his interview with Vedenkin.

At the conference a reporter from the daily Moskovsky Komsomolets, produced documents identifying Vedenkin as a member of the group.

Rashitsky said the documents had most likely been forged by Vedenkin.
