Far East Energy Crisis

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East () -- Plagued by failing equipment and a lack of funds, the port city of Vladivostok is running low on electricity and heating fuel, Itar-Tass reported Monday.

The city of 700,000 people is down to less than half its normal energy stocks after its main thermal power station ran out of fuel and the electricity supply from the Amur region was cut off, the report said.

The sole remaining source of power is a coal-burning station which was down to only about a week's supply of coal, Itar-Tass said.

The agency said the region's energy sector is strangled by consumers' failure to pay their bills and the government's inability to produce promised subsidies this year.
