Crimea Speaker Resigns

SIMFEROPOL, Crimea () -- The chairman of the local parliament in the Crimean peninsula resigned Thursday in the latest bout of a protracted struggle for power in Ukraine's autonomous, pro-Russian region.

Sergei Tsekov offered to quit at a closed session after members of Parliament accused him of failing to improve relations with both Ukraine and Russia. Sixty-six of 75 deputies in the chamber approved his resignation.

Tsekov became the most powerful figure in Crimea last September after Parliament stripped regional president Yury Meshkov of most of his prerogatives.
