Tomba Loses in Japan

FURANO, Japan () -- Alberto Tomba, ending a seven-slalom winning streak in devastating fashion, slid out of his second consecutive race Monday as Austrian Mario Reiter sped to victory in a World Cup giant slalom.

The result continued Tomba's losing streak in Japan. He never has won a race in Japan in a decade on the World Cup tour.

On Sunday, trying for his eighth victory in eight slalom races this winter, Tomba made a mistake early in his first run and later skied out of the course. He said the course had been designed "to defeat Tomba."

Tomba, known as "La Bomba" for his explosive racing, now has won 10 of 14 races this season and still holds a big lead in the overall World Cup standings
