Russia Calls for Center's Closure

WARSAW -- The Russian Embassy in Warsaw has demanded the closure of a Chechen Information Center, rejecting Poland's explanation that the center was providing war relief, PAP news agency said Monday.

"The Russian Embassy has complained about the center in Krakow ... and called for its closure," PAP quoted a Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying.

"We replied that the center coordinates humanitarian aid for Chechen war victims and is run by private individuals with no ties to the ministry."

But Russian press attach? Grigory Yakimshin rejected this. "The Polish Foreign Ministry's explanation does not satisfy us," Yakimshin told PAP.

"It is difficult to regard demonstrations as humanitarian aid," he added.

The center was believed to have been involved in recent marches supporting Chechnya's bid for independence.
