Israeli Envoy Called Spy

MOSCOW () -- Russia's security service Thursday accused an expelled Israeli diplomat of spying for Israel's Mossad intelligence agency and said a Russian citizen has been detained on suspicion of passing him secrets.

The Federal Security Service, or FSB, said it had kept the case under wraps at Israel's request. But the service said it decided to reveal the espionage story after Israeli media described the incident in an "unfriendly" manner and published "invented facts" about mounting Russian espionage in Israel.

According to an FSB statement, the Russian was detained in December while handing over unspecified secret materials to a foreign diplomat. The FSB said the operation was organized by a Mossad agent "acting under the cover of a counselor at the Israeli Embassy in Moscow." The Russian citizen was arrested, while the diplomat was asked to leave the country, the FSB said.
