Giant Slalom to Italy

SIERRA NEVADA, Spain ) -- Deborah Compagnoni of Italy won Thursday's giant slalom in the World Alpine Skiing Championships, adding to the gold medal she won in the discipline in the '94 Olympics.

The 25-year-old, two-time Olympic champion, who also won gold in the '92 Olympics in super-G, was fourth after the first run but overcame the leaders with a strong run on the steep, icy and unusually long course for women.

Compagnoni finished with a combined time of 2:10.74 over Karin Roten of Austria in 2:11.09 and Martina Ertl of Germany in 2:11.44.
