Crashed Plane to Fly Again

KIEV -- Ukraine and Russia have pledged to continue building a transport aircraft whose sole prototype was destroyed in a crash earlier this month, Ukrainian radio reported.

Ministers from the two former Soviet republics initialed an accord to proceed with construction of the Antonov An-70, intended to replace ageing planes from the former Soviet fleet. Western firms are also believed to be interested in the plane.

The An-70 prototype crashed Feb. 10 outside Kiev apparently after going out of control and colliding with an An-72 aircraft shadowing it on a test flight. Seven crew members died.

The radio report said both sides predicted the An-70's bright future would be unaffected by the accident.

A companion accord also initialed on Saturday brought together 500 Russian and 300 Ukrainian firms to finance construction. Uzbekistan is also taking part in the project.
