Clashes Shake Chiapas

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico () -- At least a dozen people have been injured in clashes in San Cristobal de las Casas between supporters and opponents of Catholic Bishop Samuel Ruiz, who is mediating the crisis touched off by the state of Chiapas' 13-month-old Indian rebel insurgency, witnesses said.

The violence took place in the plaza outside the city's main cathedral when an estimated 500 demonstrators carrying banners demanding Ruiz's resignation moved in and were stopped by Ruiz supporters ringing the building.

The anti-Ruiz protesters see the controversial bishop as sympathetic to the Indian rebels.
