27 Die in Mine Blast

QUETTA, Pakistan () -- Twenty-seven men were believed killed by a powerful explosion that buried them in a coal mine near this southwestern city, the national news agency reported Monday.

The blast at the Gilani Coal Mine occurred Sunday night and was apparently caused when methane gas ignited, said Mian Abbas, the chief inspector for coal mines. Rescue workers had recovered 18 bodies as of Monday afternoon. Nine more men were missing and feared dead, officials said.
