Security Force Banned

TBILISI, Georgia () -- Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze has decided to disband an elite security force after it was implicated in an assassination attempt against him, a security official said.

Avtandil Ioseliani, acting security chief in this former Soviet republic, said Saturday that several commanding officers and other employees of the Alpha security unit were responsible for the Aug. 29 bomb attack against Shevardnadze, Itar-Tass reported.

A new elite security force will be formed soon, but with a smaller staff, Ioseliani said. It may include former Alpha officers.

The Alpha unit fell under the security ministry until the attack, when it was put directly under Shevardnadze, Itar-Tass said.
