NTV, AFP Win Press Accolades

Coverage of the war in Chechnya dominated the International Press Center & Club's annual Freedom of the Press awards this year, with honors going to field reporters at NTV television and Agence France Presse.

The award is given to news organizations or individuals thought to have best served the interests of a free press in Russia over the year.

The award was given to NTV for the political courage the station and its reporters showed in covering the war in Chechnya, particularly in the early stages of the conflict. AFP was honored for maintaining coverage of the story after most of the international press had left the scene.

Also honored at Saturday's ceremony was a liberal-leaning newspaper from Saransk, Stolitsa S, which has fought a difficult battle to stay in print against hostile local authorities.

Yelena Bonner, the wife of the late dissident Andrei Sakharov, accepted an award to her husband and delivered a speech that took the government to task over its policy in Chechnya.
