Milan Pulls Away in Serie A

ROME -- Striker George Weah scored three minutes from time to give AC Milan a 1-0 win at Lazio of Rome, increasing the Red-and-Black's lead in the Italian Serie A soccer.

Liberian-born Weah, who won Africa's Golden Ball Award this week and is a favorite to claim the European version later this month, closed a well-orchestrated counterattack Sunday, pushing the ball through three Lazio defenders and sliding it underneath charging goalkeeper Francesco Mancini.

The result improved Milan to 8-3-1 and 27 points, increasing its lead to four points over second-place AC Parma (6-5-1), which drew 1-1 at Napoli.

Fiorentina, which beat Padova 1-0 on an injury-time goal, and season surprise Atalanta of Bergamo, which routed Vicenza 3-1, follow with 22 points.

Veteran striker Gianluca Vialli scored a hat-trick as defending champion Juventus of Turin (6-3-3, 21 points) moved up to fifth place with a 5-0 rout of crosstown rival Torino.
