Quakes Hit Far East

MOSCOW () -- Two weekend earthquakes measuring at least 5 on the Richter scale shook parts of Russia's Far East including the island of Sakhalin, where a huge tremor killed almost 2,000 in May.

Russian news agencies said Sunday there were no reports of casualties or damage from the earthquakes which hit on Saturday night.

The first, measuring up to 6.5 on the Richter scale, struck in the Pacific Ocean off the northern tip of the Kuril Islands, Interfax said.

Three hours later, a second quake of about the same magnitude struck in the sea off the northeast coast of Sakhalin.
