Zapatistas Extend Truce

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico () -- Rebels extended a unilateral cease-fire hours before it expired Friday, saying talks with the Mexican government will be held soon.

The rebel Zapatista National Liberation Army pledged Thursday to continue its truce, which was to have expired at midnight, until Jan. 18.

A rebel-backed opposition leader also called on his followers Thursday to stop seizing town halls, after a shoot-out Tuesday killed seven people in renewed tensions in the year-old uprising by impoverished Indian peasants in the southern state of Chiapas
