UN to Stay in Abkhazia

UNITED NATIONS ) -- The Security Council has voted unanimously to keep its 136 observers in Abkhazia, despite stalled talks toward a political settlement in Georgia's breakaway region.

The resolution approved Thursday calls on Georgia and Abkhazia to speed up peace negotiations and accelerate the return of refugees. It extends the UN observer mandate for four months.

"Repatriation," said Czech Ambassador Karel Kovanda, "must be speeded up, so that its end can be timed in months, and not centuries.''
