Systems Fail, Jet Safe

MOSCOW ( -- A Russian Tupolev-154 jetliner made a safe emergency landing after a hydraulic system failure shortly after takeoff, Itar-Tass said Thursday.

The airliner, with a capacity of 180 passengers, was en route to Moscow on Wednesday night from Abakan, 2,950 kilometers to the east.

The news agency said the oil supply to two of the plane's three engines was cut off during takeoff and climb.

The plane circled the airport for over three hours to burn fuel while airport personnel prepared for an emergency landing. The captain feared that lowering the landing gear would use up the remaining hydraulic fluid and cause him to lose control of the aircraft, Itar-Tass said.
