Rwanda Asks for Aid

GENEVA () -- The huge task of rebuilding Rwanda from the ashes of genocide and destruction is too great for the country to achieve alone and will require aid from the international community, says Rwanda's prime minister.

Faustin Twagiramungu, addressing donor countries on the first day of a two-day conference Wednesday hosted by the United Nations, made an international appeal for $764 million.

Twagiramungu outlined the work already achieved by his government including the reopening of health centers and primary schools. But he stressed that the next and most important task was to ensure the return of more than 2 million Rwandan refugees.
