Poles, Uzbeks Sign Pact

WARSAW () -- Polish President Lech Walesa and his counterpart from Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, have signed a friendship and cooperation treaty.

Karimov, on an one-day official visit to Warsaw on Wednesday, also signed several other agreements on cooperation and met government and parliamentary officials.

At a meeting with reporters Karimov criticized Russian military intervention in Chechnya.

"We understand that Chechnya is an integral part of the Russian Federation ... but we think that armed force must not be used against a nation," PAP news agency quoted him as saying.
