MOSCOW () -- The presidents of Russia and Kazakhstan have signed a declaration to merge their two armies, Interfax reported Friday.

The merger includes joint training exercises, joint military planning and the coordinated use of troops, according to a Russo-Kazakh agreement signed by President Boris Yeltsin and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazar-bayev. The plan between the two nations also includes joint protection of borders the two countries share with other nations.

The presidents also signed agreements on the status of Russian citizens living in Kazakhstan and Kazakh citizens living in Russia.
