Elway Gets Starter Spot

DENVER () -- Denver Broncos' quarterback John Elway will replace Miami's Dan Marino as the American Football Conference starter in the Pro Bowl, a Broncos' spokeswoman said Thursday.

Marino is still bothered by the Achilles tendon injury that sidelined him most of last season. He said recently that doctors told him he could avoid further surgery by devoting himself to his rehabilitation program.

Elway, in his 12th National Football League season, also was the Conference's starting Pro Bowl quarterback in 1987 and 1994. He got his first Pro Bowl berth in 1986.

The Pro Bowl, the league's all-star game, will be played on Feb. 5 in Hawaii.
