Uzbek Is Top Pianist

LONDON () -- Yevgeny Mursky, 19, from Uzbekistan won the World Piano Competition on Tuesday after a grueling two-week battle against more than 40 top young pianists from around the globe.

The Tashkent teenager landed the ?10,000 ($15,760) first prize and a string of prestigious concert appearances with his soulful rendition of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. Mursky, who constantly mopped his sweating brow throughout the flamboyant performance, won roars of approval from the Royal Festival Hall audience for his style and ebullience. Mursky, now studying at a music school in Trossingen, Germany, fought off Britain's Paul Lewis, 22, who had to settle for second place.
