Tupolev Set to Compete

FARNBOROUGH, England () -- Russian aircraft designer/ producer Tupolev says it can compete in the world aerospace market because its planes are cheaper than its rivals.

The company, employing some 14,000 people, is getting set to launch its new TU-204 airliner in two versions -- one powered by Russian PS-90A engines, the other by Rolls-Royce RB211s.

"Our product is competitive," Tupolev director general Valentin Kalymov said. He said Tupolev jets were 30 percent cheaper than those of Boeing Co. and Europe's Airbus Industrie.
