Towns to Get Non-Soviet Names

MOSCOW -- Brick Factory Village and more than 200 other towns and villages in the Moscow region will soon get new, non-Soviet names, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

Moscow region authorities have decided to replace names, such as October Banner Soviet Farm Central Village, with ones which are less ideologically inspired, the daily Moskovsky Komsomolets wrote.

A commission of experts will find new names for the villages but local residents will have the final word.

Since 1991 the pre-1917 names of many towns and streets have replaced Soviet-era designations.
