Satellite Launched

MOSCOW () -- Russia launched a military satellite from its Plesetsk space complex in northeastern Russia, Itar-Tass reported Wednesday.

The Kosmos-2292 was launched Tuesday night, and mission control officials said the satellite and its onboard equipment were functioning normally.

In late August, Russia sent another military satellite into orbit from the Baikonur space complex in neighboring Kazakhstan.

Baikonur, the former Soviet Union's main space launching facility, has been at the center of a dispute between Russia and Kazakhstan since the Soviet collapse in 1991.
