"Prices for everything have gone up, so the public transportation fares must also rise," said Yury Astrovsky, who is in charge of the city transportation development office. Without a price hike, Astrovsky said, service would suffer. The last fare rise took place on June 23, when metro, bus, and tram fares jumped from 100 to 150 rubles.
The monthly yedinny pass granting access to all forms of public transportation will also nearly double, rising from 16,000 to 30,000 rubles, city transport officials said.
As recently as two years ago a token for a single ride cost one ruble, which was worth about one-third of a cent at the time.
