Plague Hits India

SURAT, India () -- Panic-stricken people wrapped their faces in cloth, raced through streets covered with white DDT powder and fled Friday in overcrowded cars, trains and buses as the death toll from a plague outbreak rose to 26.

More than 100,000 people have abandoned Surat since the first plague death Tuesday. Officials worry many may be headed for Bombay, a city of 12.5 million only 260 kilometers to the south, where authorities have ordered hospitals to open wards for plague patients.

Police sealed off plague-stricken areas in Surat, a slum-choked city of 1.5 million in the western state of Gujarat.

People were bringing sick or dead family members to the hospital about every five minutes Friday.
