Norway Refuses Zhirinovsky

STAVANGER, Norway -- Ultranationalist politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky has been denied an entry visa to Norway because of his behavior on past foreign visits, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

"It is because of the threatening and offensive remarks he has repeatedly made while abroad," said Norwegian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ingvard Havnen.

During past trips abroad, the right-wing member of parliament repeatedly threatened his host nations, leading other countries, including Germany, France and Switzerland, to refuse to allow him to visit.

Zhirinovsky and four other Russian politicians had been invited to a now-canceled seminar that had been set for later this month. The other four were granted visas to Norway, the only NATO country that shares a land border with Russia.

Havnen of the Foreign Ministry said Norway did not expect any reaction from Russia or from Zhirinovsky.
