NHL Talks Under Way

NEW YORK () -- The fate of the 1994 U.S. major league baseball season and a new television contract were on their minds if not on the table when the National Hockey League and its players resumed negotiations Friday.

The players, who have been in training camp since the first weekend of September, want nothing to do with a league-proposed salary cap and were expected to make a counterproposal Friday. They anticipate an owner lockout unless a collective bargaining agreement is signed before Oct. 1.

In Anaheim, California, Mighty Ducks general manager Jack Ferreira announced that former Moscow Dinamo defenseman Anatoly Fedotov, who played three games for the Ducks last season, has retired from professional hockey, citing personal reasons.
