NFL Referees' Deal

NEW YORK () -- The National Football League has reached a tentative agreement on a new seven-year contract with game officials, apparently averting a referees' strike, the NFL said.

The agreement, approved Wednesday night by the board of directors of the union, must be ratified by the 108 league officials.

Under the new deal, salaries will be doubled and pension benefits will be tripled. The officials had threatened an Oct. 9 strike.
