India Plague Spreads

NEW DELHI () -- Plague cases multiplied across India on Wednesday as the disease spread into the state surrounding Bombay and across the country to the teeming city of Calcutta.

Nearly 1,000 people were stricken by the disease which kills if not treated, authorities said. The victims included more than 600 in Surat city, epicenter of the scourge, where two more people died overnight raising the official death toll to 46.

West Bengal Information Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya said his state's government expected more cases and had ordered airports, railway stations and ports to keep a strict watch.

"The government is combating this menace on a war footing," he said.
