Crimea Rift Widens

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine () -- The president of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula moved to make peace with the regional parliament Thursday, but deputies rejected his concession allowing their assembly formally to reopen.

In Kiev, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and his parliament united in denouncing Crimea's pro-Russian leadership and demanded the region obey the Ukrainian constitution.

The Kiev parliament Thursday voted overwhelmingly to set a Nov. 1 deadline to Crimea's leaders to bring their constitution in line with national law.
