Crimea Chief Loses Powers

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine -- The president of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula, Yury Meshkov, Thursday accused the region's parliament of staging a coup against him but appeared powerless to resist.

In the last two days, the peninsula's pro-Russian parliament have approved laws reducing Meshkov's powers to that of head of government, curtailing his right to appoint local officials,, and setting up machinery to declare presidents unfit.
