Coup Leader Mobbed

MONROVIA, Liberia () -- Civilians mobbed and arrested the leader of a failed coup attempt Friday, recognizing the former army commander notorious for his atrocities as he tried to slip out of Monrovia.

General Charles Julue on Thursday seized the presidential mansion in Monrovia, but military sources said he apparently escaped from it before the African intervention force pounded the oceanside building with artillery from tanks and gunboats as dusk fell.

As he attempted to escape, civilians recognized the man who was known for leading atrocities against civilians in 1985 and 1990.

Julue protested, claiming his name was Harrison Saydee. A reporter watched as the crowd that gathered mobbed him, tearing off most of his clothing to produce an identity card showing he was the feared general.
