Coal Miners On Strike

MOSCOW () -- Russian coal workers in the Far North Komi republic staged a one-day strike Monday in a row over salary arrears, a spokesman for the miners' independent trade union said.

The spokesman said 10 of Vorkuta's 12 mines were affected by the stoppage. Vorkuta is one of Russia's main coal-producing areas. Interfax said some 3,500 workers took part in the strike. Mining was continuing but loading was halted.

Russian miners, most of whom have not been paid for months, have staged several wildcat protests in recent months, ranging from hunger strikes to underground sit-ins.

Union leaders have said they will organize mass protests next month
