China Weighs Boycott of Asian Games

BEIJING -- China said Thursday it would wait for official word that the president of its rival, Taiwan, would attend the opening ceremony of next month's Asian Games in Japan before deciding whether to boycott.

"If he goes of course we will oppose it, but right now there are too many rumors," said an official from the information department of the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission. China had not received official notification of the invitation, the official said.

In Taiwan on Wednesday, the foreign affairs minister said President Lee Teng-hui had accepted an invitation to go to Hiroshima, extended earlier this summer by Kuwait's Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad, president of the Olympic Council of Asia.

China has regarded Taiwan as a renegade province since the 1949 end of the Chinese civil war, firmly opposing any moves that would appear to give Taiwan status as an independent country.
