BRIDGETOWN, Barbados () -- Curtly Ambrose, spearhead of the West Indian bowling attack since his international debut in 1988, will have surgery on his right shoulder and miss the national team's tour of India next month.

Ambrose's injury, first diagnosed while with his English county team Northamptonshire, was confirmed Wednesday, the tall Antiguan's 31st birthday.

West Indies cricket official Stephen Camacho said Ambrose had been diagnosed as having rotator cuff tendonitis.
