Benetton Gets Reprieve

PARIS () -- The world's leading Formula One motor-racing team Benetton has escaped an expected punishment for tampering with refueling equipment.

The International Automobile Federation ruled Wednesday that Benetton had made an "honest mistake" in removing a filter at July's German Grand Prix in Hockenheim and decided to make no sanctions.

But the federation's world council rejected an appeal in a separate incident involving Benetton, ruling that Michael Schumacher's disqualification after winning last month's Belgian Grand Prix, for using an undersized skid-block under his car, should stand. The body also declined to punish the McLaren team for using an illegal fully automatic gearbox at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola in May.
