Belarus Boat Tops Russia In Rowing

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- The Russian open weight women's eight narrowly escaped disqualification at the start, then was beaten at the end Thursday in semifinal action in the World Rowing Championships.

Belarus won the three-boat semifinal in a strong crosswind, ahead of the United States and Russia. Belarus and the United States will join semifinal victors Australia and The Netherlands and heat winners Germany and Romania in the "A" final Sunday.

Russia jumped the flag once at the start of the 2,000-meter race and appeared to have done so again on the restart -- an automatic disqualification. But after reviewing the video, officials allowed the Russians to race.

Two American boats in nine semifinal races advanced to the "A" finals, the women's eight and the men's lightweight single sculler. American boats in seven other events had already made the finals.
