Barge Capsizes, Kills 7

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East () -- A Russian barge carrying farm equipment capsized in the Bering Strait, killing seven people and leaving two missing, Itar-Tass reported Wednesday. One person survived.

Rescue workers continued to search for the remaining passengers off the coast of the Chukotka Peninsula, 200 kilometers from Alaska, Itar-Tass said.

Ten people, including four children, were aboard the barge when it overturned less than 100 meters from shore.

The sole survivor told authorities that the senior sailor at the wheel was drunk at the time of the accident. The passenger said an argument broke out soon after the barge left shore and the sailor sharply turned the wheel, causing the barge to capsize.
