Assassination Attempt Goes Awry in Kiev

KIEV -- Attackers stabbed and seriously wounded a man they had mistaken for Ukraine's foreign trade minister officials said Wednesday.

A spokesman for President Leonid Kuchma said four men had intercepted a car which they thought was carrying the minister, Serhiy Osyka, on Tuesday. They stabbed the car's occupant, one of Osyka's advisers, who is now in serious condition in hospital.

"This was a political attack, a reaction to the minister's initiatives," said a source close to the government.

Osyka, Ukraine's youngest cabinet minister at 39, was appointed after Kuchma won presidential elections in July. He has called for tougher penalties against the illegal export of diamonds, precious metals, other raw materials and currency.
