Arms Sales to Double

MOSCOW () -- Russia's arms sales are expected to nearly double this year to $4 billion from a mere $2.2 billion in 1993, thanks to reestablishment of state control over trade and the direct assistance of senior government officials, the country's arms trade chief said Monday.

Marshal Yevgeny Shaposhnikov, president of the Russian state arms trading company Rosvooruzheniye, told a news conference that the restoration of the government monopoly over arms exports has already helped Russia regain some of its market share from foreign competitors.
