Arms Deal Criticized

TOKYO () -- North Korea on Friday strongly condemned South Korea's plan to accept Russian weapons as part of Moscow's repayment for a long-standing debt to Seoul, saying the step increased the danger of war.

South Korean news reports had said Seoul and Moscow had signed an accord under which the South would take Russian weapons and raw materials in repayment for part of a $1.47 billion loan.

"This reveals the South Korean puppets' sinister intention to block the (North Korean-U.S.) talks at any cost and drive the situation on the Korean Peninsula back to the brink of war," said the North's official Korean Central News Agency, monitored in Tokyo.

The agency also reported that a Russian envoy met Kim Yong-nam, North Korea's Deputy Prime Minister in charge of foreign affairs, in Pyongyang on Friday, but gave no details of what was discussed at the meeting.
