Armenia Pays for Gas in Jewels

YEREVAN, Armenia -- Armenia has agreed to pay for gas supplies from the Central Asian republic of Turkmenistan in hard currency as well as an unspecified amount of jewellery and consumer goods.

Armenian officials said the agreement was reached in the capital Yerevan during talks Tuesday with a visiting Turkmen government delegation.

Under the agreement Turkmenistan would supply 5 million cubic meters of natural gas a day to Armenia. Yerevan would pay for the supplies in hard currency as well as consumer goods and jewellery.

The officials gave no further details.

In a separate development, Armenia's state television said gas supplies from Turkmenistan resumed on Tuesday after a brief suspension caused by an accident Monday on the Uzbek section of a pipeline crossing the republic.
