Track Stars Leaping for Gold Jackpot

BERLIN -- Colin Jackson and Mike Powell are the two athletes left in the race for the biggest prize in track and field, a jackpot of 20 kilograms of gold bars.

The jackpot, worth about $285,000, is given to the athletes who win their event at all four of the so-called Golden Four meets -- Oslo, Zurich, Brussels and Berlin.

Berlin's ISTAF meet Tuesday concludes the series. Only Jackson over 110-meter hurdles and Powell in the long jump have won their events at all of the previous three Golden Four meets.

Jackson, the British ace, who is the world record holder and world champion, has dominated the event throughout the season and only a major surprise could keep him from at least half of the jackpot.

Powell, the long jump world record holder, suffered a groin injury in struggling to win in Brussels and is uncertain about his fitness.
