Top KGB Agent Dies

MOSCOW () -- Dmitry Yakushkin, described as one of the top KGB agents in Washington in the late 1970s and early 1980s, died Tuesday after a protracted illness, the Itar-Tass news agency said. He was 71.

Yakushkin was head of the "American section of the first chief department of the KGB," the Soviet intelligence agency, the report stated.

Yakushkin was officially assigned to Washington as a diplomat, but worked as a spy for about five years in the 1970s and 1980s, when the Cold War was in full swing.
